MECI'S BALANCE SHEET FOR THE EUROPEAN FUSION REACTORS PROJECT
The Apuan company supplies lifting machines
And if new requests arrive, hiring will begin.
October 18, 2019
MASSA. Apuan technology for the Iter reactor. A €350,000 order arrives in Massa, marking a significant step toward doubling the company's workforce (and employees). But let's look at the details. There are three small scales. But don't imagine them as small, a mere trinket, since they're lifting machines capable of lifting 450 tons.
They were built by the company MECI srl (Marina Moruzzi is the managing director, her brother Michele is the sales manager), which has been operating since 2001 along Via Aurelia in Massa, in the area behind McDonald's. They have already been shipped to southern France for the international ITER project, which involves the construction of ten power plants. "ITER" is, in fact, an international project that aims to build an experimental nuclear fusion reactor capable of producing a fusion plasma with more power than the power required to heat the plasma itself. The reactor is designed to be equivalent to a zero-power reactor. Specifically, ITER is a deuterium-tritium reactor in which the plasma is confined in a magnetic field inside a device called a tokamak.
Construction is underway in Cadarache, in the South of France, by an international consortium comprising the European Union, Russia, China, Japan, the United States, India, and South Korea. Apuan company Meci srl has been awarded the contract for all lifting equipment and has so far supplied three 450-ton lifting beams with related accessories. Given that there will be around ten lifting stations in total, the Apuan company may receive new orders shortly. The "Iter" project and the production of the lifting beams were overseen by sales manager Luca Agostini and have brought a significant injection of work to the Apuan company, which currently employs five people. And if the orders are followed up—or rather, if new orders arrive, Meci says—the workforce could double as early as next year, creating at least five new positions in a region that is always in dire need of employment.
